Beautiful Talks With Darryl Stephens | Part 2

HEARTTHROB DARRYL STEPHENS GOT HIS BIG BREAK ON THE 1999 MTV TEEN DRAMA UNDRESSED. A FEW FILMS LATER HE CAME TO FAME AS NOAH NICHOLSON, THE STAR OF LOGO’S PREMIERE SERIES NOAH’S ARC. NOT A BAD ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR SOMEONE WHO PLANNED A FUTURE AS SOCIAL WORKER. WELCOME TO PART 2 OF THE BEAUTIFUL| DARRYL STEPHENS INTERVIEW.

Noah’s Arc is about a small group of mostly black gay men living in Los Angeles. How did your family and friends react when you accepted this role?

Darryl: They said, "THANK GOD YOU FINALLY GOT A JOB."

Besides ‘Noah’s Arc’ you have been pretty busy this year in other film projects. We are thinking of ‘Another Gay Movie’ and ‘Boy Culture.’ Can you tell us something about these projects?

Darryl: Well, it’s kind of funny. The writer director of ‘Boy Culture,’ Q. Allan Brocka, is a friend of Patrik-Ian Polk’s. He was looking to cast the jock character in his film with a black actor. He described the character to Patrik and asked him if he knew anyone who could play it.  Patrik sent him me.  He was a bit reluctant because I guess he wasn’t sure about the time frame and which project would be released first, but he sent me to the audition and I ended up getting the part. The line-producer on ‘Boy Culture,’ Jenny Hinkey, ended up being a producer on ‘Another Gay Movie.’ At one point, she called me to ask me about an assistant director I had worked with on the pilot for ‘Noah.’ We got to talking and she asked me why I hadn’t auditioned for Todd’s movie. I told her nobody had called me in.  So she stepped away from the phone for about 30 seconds and came back and said, "can you be here at 4?" So I went in and auditioned for that… and that’s why working in LA is all about who you know.

Besides your work, what else do you enjoy in life?

Darryl: Who said I enjoyed my work? No. I’m kidding. I’m a big music fan. iTunes is my life. And I enjoy writing. I’m working with one my best friends on a screenplay.

Out of all the masculine icons, past and present, can you name two who really inspired you ?

Darryl: Masculine? Have you seen the characters I play?  No. I’m kidding. I’m inspired by so many people… Gosh… I would say Sidney Poitier was an inspiration for being an intelligent, upstanding black man during a time when people weren’t supposed to believe that we existed.  He allowed us all to bring an honesty to the characters we were playing. And then, in a completely different way, Prince has been a big inspiration. Not many people saw this movie, but in ‘Under The Cherry Moon,’ he plays this gigolo with Jerome Benton. Their comic timing in that film is impeccable. They play like Laurel and Hardy or some other brilliant comic duo. And then I think as a youngster, I looked up to Prince for always just being who he wanted to be. He expressed himself and his sexuality in the most unapologetic way… and then he turned around and told you how spiritual he was and didn’t bat an eyelash. He was a musical genius, yes. But he was also a fearless icon. I love that about him.
